With a new year comes a renewed focus on financial well-being. While some economic uncertainties linger from 2024, a spirit of optimism is taking hold. Many Americans are looking to solidify their financial foundation and achieve long-term goals. So, what are the top trends we'll see in personal finance this year?

1. Debt Demolition: High interest rates remain a concern for many, making debt payoff a top priority. A recent survey by Bankate revealed that over 20% of Americans named debt reduction as their primary financial goal. This focus is especially strong among older generations – Gen X and Baby Boomers are prioritizing debt repayment at a higher rate than younger demographics.

2. Building a Safety Net: The importance of a robust emergency fund can't be overstated. Unexpected expenses can derail even the best financial plans. Experts typically recommend saving enough to cover 3-6 months of living costs. 2025 is a great year to prioritize building this safety net, ensuring you can weather financial storms with peace of mind.

3. Saving for the Future's Sake: Whether it's retirement, a child's education, or that dream vacation, saving for long-term goals continues to be a significant motivator. With a focus on responsible budgeting and smart investing strategies, 2025 can be the year you make significant progress towards those milestones.

4. Boosting Income Streams: While inflation may be cooling down, increasing your income can be a powerful financial booster. Consider exploring opportunities to negotiate a raise, take on a side hustle, or invest in skill development that can lead to higher-paying jobs.

5. Financial Literacy for All: Financial literacy is no longer a luxury – it's a necessity. In 2025, a growing number of people are prioritizing financial education. This includes learning how to budget effectively, manage debt responsibly, and invest for the future.

Taking Charge of Your Finances in 2025

No matter your financial goals, 2025 is the perfect time to take action. Here are some steps to get you started:

Set SMART Goals: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound goals will keep you on track

Create a Budget: Track your income and expenses to identify areas where you can save.Several free budgeting apps are available online.

Develop a Plan: Break down your long-term goals into smaller, manageable steps.

Remember, financial wellness is a journey, not a destination.
The resume is the first thing that a person will see when you apply for a job, so it's worthwhile to make sure your resume stands out from the rest of the crowd. If you didn't get referred to a position, you'll be pit against hundreds of others with similar qualifications, so what makes you different? It's worth it to find ways to make you rise above the rest.

Should you make your resume fancy to stand out?

A big question you may have is should you try to mess with how your resume looks and add color, so that you can make it pop and stand out. If you're in a design or marketing-related field, this can be a great way to showcase your skills and differentiate yourself from other designers. I've even seen people take to making their resume an interactive game on the Internet to showcase programming skills.

But will making a fancy resume matter in most cases? Probably not. Most jobs want to know that you have the desired skills and it's better to showcase that through writing than through a snazzy resume (although they can be really unique and creative). If you want to do it and it's part of your personality, go for it. Just be warned that it can annoy recruiters.

Format, format, format

Another big mistake that you see on a lot of resumes, is simple formatting errors. It can be easy to forget to space things the right way or not keep consistent formatting. You want to make sure that all your margins are the same and you use a consistent format when bolding or italicizing letters. It may not seem like a big deal, but the human eye can catch the tiniest slip in details and make your resume less appealing.

Also, remember to use as much of the white space as possible. You don't want to keep a lot of blank space on the paper. If you have too much, you're doing it wrong and can write more about your past experiences. And while we're on the subject, use a spell checker and look for grammatical errors in your resume. Also, try to avoid using colloquial language at all costs as it can come off as unprofessional.

Focus on accomplishments, not descriptions

One of the biggest problems with many resumes, is people simply list a job description instead of accomplishments. When making a resume, most people know what a "product manager" is, so don't just restate your job description in bullet points below. Instead, focus on what makes you stand out, you're achievements in that role. If you increased productivity, explain by how much and how you did that.

"Increase team productivity to accomplish company goals" is vague and boring, but "Increased productivity by 20% by implementing new goal-structured program" is more exciting and helps show how you accomplished goals. Using specific goals can help you stand out from other resumes.

Are you shining up your resume while looking for a new job? Defynance has created our resource marketplace to help you along in your career journey.
Balancing a job and college can be quite difficult. Whether you have a full-time job and are taking class on the side or you're a full-time student trying to make some extra cash every week, finding the right balance is tough. The good news is that the rules to succeed are similar for both cases. At the end of the day, the goal is to not overwhelm yourself and create a balance between school and work.

Make a plan

The best way to find this balance is to make a plan and map out what you will do with your time. You'll probably have a set work schedule and know when your classes out, but you'll need some extra time to spend studying or working on any projects. Also keep note of when you'll have exams, so that you know when to put some more time towards studying and take some time off of work. Some weeks you may find yourself overwhelmed, and that's ok. Remember to take note of when that happens, so that you can remember to plan for similar situations in the future.

Break down big tasks

When trying to balance college and work, a ton of tasks can build up and get overwhelming really quick. Sometimes you will wonder how you'll even manage to keep your head above water as you try to balance all the large tasks building up. One way to make your big tasks into smaller, less intimidating tasks. If you have a big paper due for school, break it down into smaller, more manageable sections, like the introduction, conclusion, and doing the research for it. This can help you do more manageable tasks and be more rewarding as you make small accomplishments towards a larger goal.

Don't be scared to ask for help

By both working and going to college, you're taking on a lot. And sometimes you can get pretty overwhelmed, so don't be afraid to ask those around you for help. Whether you need a coworker to help with some work or need extra assistance from a classmate, you have people willing to help you out. Some periods will be busier than others and in those times you shouldn't be scared to ask those around you for some help.

Make some time for yourself

One thing that's pretty easy to do is to overcommit yourself to both school, work, and anything else that's going on in life. And while that's ok, also remember to take some time for yourself. If you need to exercise or paint to get through the week, make some time for that. Overwhelming yourself with work can lead to more stress, anxiety, and even lower your performance. So don't be scared to be selfish every once in a while and treat yourself.

To do this, you'll have to learn to say "no". It can be hard to give up on an opportunity or say "no" because you're scared to let someone down, but you have to learn to do so. Saying "no" to some things is important and healthy. No one knows better than you when you're about to be overwhelmed, and it's ok to tell people that. Most people should understand and all of us have been there in the past.

Remember to focus on your mental health when balancing college and work. It's one of the most important things you can do to get through this. Poor mental health can lead to further problems down the road. Defynance knows how important mental health is, that's why we included mental health resources in our resource marketplace. Accessing it is as easy as creating an account!
